Job Description

Our client is an award winning global digital rights agency for the world's independent record label sector, with a membership accounting for almost 15% of the global recorded music market. It was established to allow digital music services the opportunity to globally license commercially successful independent music labels from across the world. With offices in major music markets, the organisation now has over 700 members from 42 countries, representing more than 20,000 independent labels and aggregators worldwide.

The organisation has experienced remarkable growth since its inception and is now at a stage where it needs additional resource both to manage existing relationships and develop its business in response to the ongoing growth and complexity of the digital music marketplace. This is an opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer, with the desire to take on a challenging in-house role, to work within a relaxed working environment that also demands technical excellence.

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: drafting, negotiating and managing a variety of commercial agreements relating to the digital use of recorded music; liaising with internal teams (finance, royalty reporting, member services) to ensure the implementation of and compliance with licensing agreements; reviewing and approving streaming service partnership and co-branding agreements; assisting with the initial assessment of potential new licensing opportunities; liaising with external global legal advisors as necessary; assisting with the resolution of rights and other disputes; assisting with compliance issues faced by a growing digital rights business operating on a global stage; and assisting with the management of day-to-day membership and operational issues, and with general corporate, commercial and company secretarial matters.

The successful candidate will have a strong academic record; be qualified to practice law with 1-3 years PQE* at a well-established law firm preferably qualifying into Commercial, Corporate or IP departments (with some focus on media/entertainment, or PQE experience in-house within the music industry); have a demonstrable interest in the music industry and digital sectors; be commercially aware with an ability to apply the law to real-world business problems; and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and priorities.

*NB: PQE levels are offered as a guide only. Our client will accept applications from all candidates who can demonstrate the skills necessary for the role.
