Our take on the Cannes Film Festival

The 64th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off last week, and the usual display of elegance and glamour has certainly been on display. The rich and famous, along with some 40,000 film professionals gathered at the festival, regarded as the prime meeting point for the industry.

Overflowing with A-listers at every turn, the paparazzi have had a field day! Snapping the actors and actresses fashion faux pas, to the after party exploits. Actor legend, Robert De Niro heads this year’s jury that decided the Palme d’Or with British actor Jude Law also on the panel.  With the screening of  Lynne Ramsay’s debut film ‘We need to talk about Kevin’ starring Tilda Swinton, and Woody Allen’s latest directing adventure featuring Carla Bruni-Sarkozy,  this year didn’t fail to deliver on celebrity glitz and glam, and great films.

The real talk of the festival however, has been Brad Pitt’s latest film, ‘Tree of Life’. Also starring Sean Penn and directed by Terrence Malick, the film tells a story of a family with three boys in the 1950s. When screened to a room full of critics the audience reacted with boos and jeers. The film has received mixed reviews, despite winning the prestigious Palme d’Or, and is still being debated amongst film industry professionals – we’ll reserve judgement until we see it!

We’ve recently launched our fashion and retail division, and the fashionistas of the team have been updating us on the unforgettable moments. Cannes red carpet marathon has seen it all! From photo call cocktail dresses and day wear, to red carpet celebrity class. However it has become clear that the white dress is the film festival attendee’s favourite attire. The likes of Uma Thurman, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Olsen, X-factor judge Cheryl Cole and Sarah Jessica Parker have all been snapped sporting the white dress. But, in our opinion, it is Angelina Jolie who has stolen the show this year. Looking stunning in a chocolate brown heavy satin Versace Atelier dress she looked elegant and glamorous.

Not to be beaten, Naomi Campbell also contributed to the festival. Hosting her own catwalk show, the supermodel took over the historic Forville market for her ‘Fashion for Relief’ spectacular, raising thousands of pounds for the Japan relief effort. As well as famous models, the show also featured a range of celebrities such as actress Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda, Yasmin Le Bon, Karolina Kurkova and Robert De Niro’s wife Grace Hightower, all strutting their stuff in the name of charity. Scores of celebrities turned out to support the event, while a small army of models donated their time, walking in top designers from Lanvin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel, Valentino and a host of other top labels. The most memorable moment of the night however, came from one of the hottest professional models around, Lindsey Wiixon. She fell over, not once, not twice but three times in a single passage!
