London transport service enlightens travellers with a month of celebration

On the 75th anniversary of Windrush and during the annual celebrations of the amazing effect black individuals have had on the UK, Transport for London has released a leaflet to their five million daily passengers.

Patricia Obinna, TfL's Director of D&I, states how she values the “Experiences and contributions of our Black colleagues as well as other ethnic minority workers” and that the work they create should be celebrated and recognised “All year round”. She called on the people of London to “Acknowledge the incredible contributions of black people in London and beyond”.

Available at most underground stations, poetry works from the likes of Benjamin Zephaniah, Lemn Sissay and Grace Nichols, some of which have featured on TFL’s Poems on the Underground programme, will provide a unique perspective on the difficult and complex nature of Black History throughout the UK.

This is one of the many celebrations that TFL, which has a workforce which is 32.4 per cent ethnic minorities, have launched in honour of Black History Month.

  • Four DJ sets playing music from Africa, The Caribbean and the US will be performed across London, and Arriva Rail London staff will go to local schools to hand out books and themed goods, as well as on the London Overground. Combined with giveaways it's sure to be an exciting month.

  • A brand-new design for London’s iconic double-decker bus entered the daily service for Notting Hill Carnival earlier this year and will remain throughout October into the new year.

  • Brixton station will host a photo series that celebrates the black women who work for the company, sharing their aspirations from a personal and professional perspective.
