This week we celebrate London's blue plaques, and the women receiving them in 2024
Since 1886, buildings across London have been placed with blue plaques that honour the notable people who have lived or worked in them. After launching Plaques for Women in 2016, English Heritage have seen a rise in female nominations, and recipients of the blue plaques, such as:
Christina Broom, believed to have been Britain's first female press photographer
Diana Beck, celebrated as the UK's first female neurosurgeon
Jazz singer, Adelaide Hall, one of the first Black women to secure a long-term contract at the BBC
and Irene Barclay, the first woman to qualify as a chartered surveyor.
Many more women will be honoured throughout the year, and Blue Plaques historian Dr Susan Skedd is ‘Pleased to be able to honour so many pioneering women who not only became female 'firsts' but who were also at the very pinnacle of achievement in their chosen fields.'
To find out more about the blue plaques scheme visit the English Heritage website. A handle favourite is the London Musicians blue plaque walk.
