Celebrating 70 Years of the BFI London Film Festival

This week, we’re celebrating a major milestone for one of the world’s leading celebrations of cinema: the BFI London Film Festival is turning 70.

Taking place from 7th - 18th October, this year’s festival will present 251 features, shorts, series and immersive works from 88 countries, including 33 world premieres.

The programme brings together established names with a new generation of filmmakers, giving debut directors and emerging creatives the opportunity to have their work experienced alongside major international releases.

It also reflects how screen storytelling continues to evolve. Alongside traditional film and television, the festival’s expanded programme explores immersive art, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and video games.

Behind every production is an enormous network of creative talent. Writers, directors and performers may be the most visible, but filmmaking depends on producers, cinematographers, editors, designers, composers, technicians, marketers and countless others working behind the camera.

For 70 years, the BFI London Film Festival has created a space for those different skills and perspectives to come together, helping audiences discover new work and giving filmmakers a platform to develop their careers.

This year’s programme will be presented at venues across London, with a curated selection also screening at partner cinemas throughout the UK.
