How to Use AI to Improve Your CV, Cover Letter and Job Applications

If you’re reading this, you’re probably either already using AI in your job search or trying to work out whether it’s something you should be using.

AI can feel like the ultimate time saver as a single prompt can write your CV, cover letter and answer any screening questions. While that can be tempting, in our experience the most useful way to use AI is not to write content for you, but to use it as a review partner.

A good CV or cover letter still needs to sound like you. When we review applications, we’re not just looking for the right keywords or perfectly structured sentences, we’re trying to understand the person behind the content.

That’s where relying too heavily on AI-generated content can work against you because applications start to sound the same. The structure might be polished, but the personality disappears, and personality matters.

What AI can do very well is help you pressure-test how clearly your experience comes across.

·       Does your CV really show the strengths you think it does?

·       Does a job description reveal priorities you might have missed?

·       Does your cover letter clearly connect your experience to the role you’re applying for?

Below are some prompts you can use to review and strengthen your CV, and cover letter, without losing your own voice.

1.   Identify What a Recruiter Would Actually Notice in Your CV
Prompt:

Act as an experienced recruiter reviewing my CV for the first time.

In less than 30 seconds of reading, tell me:

  • What type of professional you think I am
  • The three strengths that stand out most
  • Any areas that are confusing or unclear
  • Whether the CV quickly communicates my value

Suggest specific improvements I should make, but do not rewrite my CV.

2.     Test Whether Your CV Matches the Job You Are Applying For
Prompt:

Compare my CV with the job description below.

Identify:

  • Where my experience clearly aligns with the role
  • Where the job description expects experience that is not obvious in my CV
  • Which achievements I should emphasise more strongly
  • Any keywords or skills that appear important in the job description but are missing from my CV

Suggest improvements without rewriting my CV.

3.     Improve the Impact of Your CV Achievements
Prompt:

Review the CV bullet point below and evaluate it based on the following:

Does it clearly explain what I did? Does it show the impact of my work? Does it include evidence such as results, scale or outcomes?

Suggest ways I could improve the bullet point to make the achievement clearer and more compelling, but do not rewrite it.

4.     Strengthen Your Professional Summary
Prompt:

Review my professional summary and assess whether it clearly communicates:

My level of experience. My key areas of expertise. The types of roles or industries I work in. The value I bring to employers.

Identify anything that feels vague or generic and suggest specific improvements without rewriting the summary.

5.     Understand What the Job Description Is Really Asking For
Prompt:

Analyse this job description and identify:

The three most important responsibilities in the role. The skills or experience the employer is most likely prioritising. Any themes that appear repeatedly throughout the description. The type of candidate the company is most likely hoping to hire.

It could be a record label, it could be in media, it could be a tech start-up.
